AMD's Godfrey Cheng Adamant on Future of Discrete GPUs

Godfrey Cheng is one of key people that AMD gained with the acquisition of ATI. This GPU enthusiast recently moved to a role closely tied with the upcoming Fusion APUs. While in the process of moving from Markham in Canada to Austin, TX, Godfrey took the time and posted his view on the upcoming relationship between the CPU, GPU and the APU.
According to Godfrey, GPUs are far from being extinct, especially if we take a look at discrete GPU market that recently had its best quarter in its history. The second quarter 2010 was also very good for AMD, since the company took over the discrete market leadership from nVidia - for the first time since the AMD-ATI takeover.
Godfrey believes "that the best days of the GPU are ahead of it." Godfrey also stated the obvious "In fact, we have several generations of APUs and GPUs in development right now! Sigh of relief No.1. "
The author concludes the piece "to finally answer the question whether discrete GPUs will die, the answer is: Hell No."
The future of GPU obviously lies in continous increase of parallel compute performance and integrating the best parts for the job.
Remember that AMD decided not to integrate its weakest discrete GPU architecture into their first Fusion APU, but rather to go with current STARS quad-core CPU and pair it with a Redwood GPU, currently known as the Radeon HD 5600 series [also present in FirePro V3800 and V4800 professional GPU].
