OFFICIAL: NVIDIA Confirms Tegra 3 "Kal-El" Name, Launch on November 9th
10/24/2011 by: Theo Valich
On recently held AsiaD conference, the last day featured a fireside chat with Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and CEO of NVIDIA. In an interview with Walt Mossberg, Jen-Hsun gave out more information on T30.
Maybe the most interesting quote was the actual name of the product. According to Jen-Hsun, NVIDIA is currently "working on our first quad-core processor, Tegra 3, which is really going to be called Kal-El. Huang notes that Kal-El is Superman's name, and that the rest of the product lineup is also based on comics: "Wayne" for Batman, etc."
There you have it. NVIDIA's codename for T30 is pending clearance to become a product name, should the company receive permission from DC Comics. After all, Kal-El is the Kryptonian name for Clark Kent, which is more known as Superman. If not, at least NVIDIA's co-founder and CEO is giving out Tegra 3 name in public - remember, PR and marketing folk did not like press uttering the name Tegra 3, as it wasn't officially sanctioned.
The launch date for the product didn't came out from NVIDIA, but rather from the mouth of Jonney Shih, co-founder and CEO of ASUSTeK Computer, more known as ASUS. Their Transformer Prime, i.e. Kal-El powered tablet which feature the same aluminum stamping created casing as their cool-looking Zenbook - will launch on November 9th, 2011.
