HP Opens the Door to webOS: Embracing Open Source
12/9/2011 by: Darleen Hartley

Today, HP announced that the company will give access to the underlying code of webOS to open source developers. A license fee will be involved. The company hopes the move will assist in improving applications and web services for next generation devices since its single integrated stack allows multiplatform portability.

Meg Whitman, HP’s repeat CEO, said "webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable." Soon, HP will also cough up ENYO, the application framework for webOS so the open source community can get crackin’. A video of Matthew McNulty, Director, webOS Tools and Frameworks, presenting at the 2010 webOS Developer Day can be seen here:

HP wants the open source community to help them set up operating principles based on the following ideals:

• The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform

• HP will be an active participant and investor in the project

• Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation

• Software will be provided as a pure open source project

Whitman who has been making changes trying to keep HP viable in the computer industry, may have made a smart move trying to get others to support their products. However, the success or failure of webOS may now depend on how well the open source community embraces it.
