Should you needed a valid excuse to dump your camcorder, LG's upcoming four-inch Optimus 2X smartphone could be the device you've been waiting for. And if the first real-life camera samples are any indication, this phone could easily double as the perfect 1080p camcorder to capture clips on the go.
For those that have been sleeping under the rock, the Optimus 2X files as one of the most powerful smartphones in the world that has managed to beat Motorola's Atrix to the dual-core punch with its ARM-based dual-core Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1GHz paired with Nvidia's Tegra 2 graphics. If there ever was such a thing as a superphone, this could be one - at least for the time being.
Our friends over at GSM Arena got hold of an Optimus 2X of their own and were quick to post absolutely stunning samples of the phone's image taking and video recording capabilities.
Without further ado, here's a sample camera clip showing off a full HD (1080p) recording. You'll be amazed how crisp the recording is at about half its length, when colors pop even under low-light conditions.
The only disappointment you'll notice is frame rate because at 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution the phone hardware is unable to maintain 24 frames per second. This could be a software issue because it's unlikely that Android 2.2 is optimized for multicore performance (LG says the device is upgradeable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread). In order to appreciate the below 1080p video sample, please should switch the YouTube player to 1080p mode and watch the clip fullscreen. Incredible eight-megapixel photo samples are right below the video.
The handset enables all of the features that Nvidia had for years in the Tegra silicon, like console-quality graphics and hardware-assisted video processing. The power of Tegra comes into play for heavy-duty tasks such as full HD video recording and encoding or snapping high-quality photos via its eight-megapixel camera on the back. The device also sports Dolby Mobile and SRS sound enhancement, 1080p HDMI video output with HDMI mirroring, a 1.3-megapixel front camera for videoconferencing and is just 11 millimeter thin.

The Optimus 2X went on sale in Korea last month and should launch in Europe soon. Amazon's listing suggest €499 price point for the continent and snowy white version. No word on availability or price points for the eventual US version yet, though. Full spec list is available here. LG is also delivering 4G-enabled G-Slate tablet in partnership with Google and T-Mobile USA, the company's foray into the tablet space.
