Can LG Cinema 3D TVs Bring 3D To Wide Mainstream Audience?

At a press event in Zagreb, Croatia, LG introduced their new 3D HDTV line-up, bundled with cool 3D glasses and some nice built-in features. With the latest LG CINEMA 3D technology, LG guarantees that their LG LW650s will provide a 3D viewing experience similar to the one you get in your favorite cinema, with comfortable glasses, great viewing angles and "extreme brightness". Intrigued by all the superlatives, we decided to check it out ourselves. Soon enough we were sitting in comfy armchairs, wearing the new 3D glasses (pink ones, of course) and eating popcorn - while watching Alice in Wonderland 3D.

Watching 3D content through the new CINEMA 3D technology on the LG LW650s was definitely a pleasant experience, especially with the new 3D glasses that bring high image quality as they produce a more natural brightness level. LG also addressed the wearing comfort, something that was criticized on the previous generation. Designers at LG were inspired with an all-time classic; Ray-Ban Wayfarer-look glasses make a big difference in wearing comfort, as the futuristic headband look worn by Geordi LaForge is replaced with Roy Orbison's signature look.
Based on our limited experience, the new glasses with CINEMA 3D technology bring life to faster scenes as they were a lot smoother, without the blur-ups with which the previous models struggled with. The best thing about the glasses is definitely their design, and also the fact that they don’t need a battery.
In addition to their original 3D content, LG also screened a short trailer of a 2D Blu-ray movie, which was converted into 3D on the fly by the TV itself. In that case we got a subsequently created 3D effect, which manifested a very good in-depth preview, but without those "it's coming out of the screen" overexposed scenes.
As for the formal part, LG also presented two other models, 47LW5500 and 42LW5500. As the name states, they're 47" and 42" displays tailored for the European market. Both TVs come with the in-built CINEMA 3D
technology, and with every one of them you will receive a pair of glasses. LG representatives touted the fact that unlike the conventional stereoscopic 3D glasses, which sale for around $100-150 each, additional Cinema 3D glasses can be bought in pairs for about $20-25, depending on region.
