4.8GHz and 3D Vision: Worlds' Fastest Laptop Launched
5/19/2011 by: Theo Valich
Given that fastest shipping clock of desktop computers is 3.4GHz, and notebooks are at 2.8GHz (EOL'ed Intel Core 2 Duo), hearing news of a manufacturer launching 4.8GHz processor is always news. In case of Maingear, the company is launching a notebook with CPU ticking at 4.8GHz. Yes, you've read it correctly - a notebook.

World's Fastest Notebook: Maingear eX-L17 3D packs Sandy Bridge processor at 4.8GHz, SSD storage can reach over 1.1GB/s...
The company launched eX-L17 3D notebook, featuring Intel Core i7-2920XM Extreme Edition processor (2.5GHz stock clock), currently the fastest mobile graphics from nVidia (GeForce GTX 485M 2GB GDDR5), up to 16GB of DDR3-1600 memory by Patriot and vast storage capabilities: up to two optical drives (Blu-ray supported), up to two Solid State (960GB Ultra-Fast RAID0, 1.2TB max. capacity), Seagate Hybrid (8GB SSD, 1TB HDD) or conventional hard disk drives (1.5TB).
Still, screen is something we consider nearly the best part of this notebook. Maingear is offering a 120Hz 17.3", Full HD (1920x1080) LED-backlit display with matte finish (no glossy reflections). Furthermore, the company integrated the infrared transmitter (IrDA) into the display bezel.
The best part of the notebook, though, is the weight: eX-L17 3D weighs in at 3.9 kilograms, 8.6 pounds with the 8-cell battery installed. In less than four kilograms, you get 4.8GHz CPU, top of the line graphics and a brilliant screen.
If you need a mobile workhorse with no compromise, consider eX-L1 7 3D. Prices start at $2,659. Price for top of the line notebook in maximum speed configuration (4.8GHz CPU, OCZ's 480GB SSD in RAID0) goes for $8,415.
