CES 2012: Dr. Paul Jacobs' Keynote

The keynote began by CEA President, Gary Shapiro introducing some statistics about CES such as the number of attendees and exhibitors (140,000 and 3,300 respectively). He continued on discussing the importance of various tech fields represented at CES such as car safety, and health applications. Shapiro also made a case against SOPA, by saying it was an excessively aggressive attempt to end Internet piracy. Finally, Shapiro introduced the keynote speaker, Paul Jacobs.
Before the Jacobs appeared on stage however, the dance crew Jabbawockeez made an appearance. Their dance had tech related themes, as was evidenced by their use of tablets during the performance.
Jacobs then began discussing the impact that Qualcomm and mobile phones in general have had upon the world. He then went into explaining that emerging markets such as China and India will account for over 50% of global GDP.
Jacobs also introduced UFC fighter Alistair “The Reem” Overeem to talk about Qualcomm Snapdragon’s ability to power gaming on mobile devices.
Jacobs continued on by saying that all current Windows Phone devices are powered by Qualcomm processors. He then introduced Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, to discuss the partnership between Nokia and Qualcomm, and touting Nokia’s new line of Windows Phones.
Jacobs then returned to the stage to discuss how Qualcomm Snapdragon processors will begin to power embedded systems in addition to mobile, this included items such as a variety of home appliances. He then introduces Lenovo’s Senior Vice President, Liu Jun, to talk about Lenovo’s new Smart TV, powered by Snapdragon.
Jacobs then introduced Sesame Street’s Grover, to help demo Qualcomm’s augmented reality system, in this case demonstrated on a tablet with an interface for children interacting with Sesame Street characters
