The World of Warcraft killer is announced. Bethesda Softworks, creators of The Elder Scrolls, a billion dollar franchise announced "The Elder Scrolls Online". As you might have guessed, this is an MMORPG (first multiplayer title from Bethesda/ZeniMax Online) set in the world which started in 1994 with The Elder Scrolls: Arena, and continued with legendary Daggerfall, Morrowind, controversial Oblivion and best-selling Skyrim.
The game will be available for Windows and Mac operating systems from day one, having hired an online gaming industry veteran Matt Firor to lead as game director. Official coming out will happen in June issue of Game Informer, and the press release revealed that ZeniMax Online Studios worked on this title since its inception in 2007. While it was widely believed that the battle for the Fallout franchise was focused around secretive Fallout MMO title from Bethesda, but the reality turned different.
We wonder what kind of game design compromises will makers have to put inside, and are we going to further continue playing boring repetitive quests as the actual MMOs such as World of Warcraft, LoTR: Online, Star Wars etc., or are Bethesda/ZeniMax Online Studios bringing something completely different.
According to Matt, it is the latter;
"We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted. It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made - and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."
Given that Skyrim sold in well over 10 million copies, achieving revenue of over 600 million US dollars, there is an increasingly hungry market for a multiplayer title set in magical TES world. Time will tell can Bethesda continue its successful path.
