8/1/2012 by: Theo Valich

In the early morning hours Pacific time (or should we say late afternoon in Europe), Microsoft Adriatic sent a press release stating that Windows 8, the long awaited and controversial operating system is released to manufacturing. In a blog an hour or so later, Windows team came with a blog confirming the announcement.

Steven Sinofsky, President of Windows and Windows Live division stated that today "marks an important milestone in the Windows 8 project. The Windows 8 team is proud to share with you that a short while ago we started releasing Windows 8 to PC OEM and manufacturing partners. This means our next milestone will be the availability of exciting new models of PCs loaded with Windows 8 and online availability of Windows 8 on October 26, 2012."

According to the company, Windows 8 Developer and Consumer Previews were installed on 16 million PCs across the globe, with the Consumer Preview being installed on no less than seven million computers. Final version carries the build number 9200, and represents how fast Microsoft developed builds of Windows 8. Windows 8 Developer Preview carried the build number 8102, Consumer Preview was markedas 8250, and almost a thousand builds later, the gold version is ready to go.

Windows RT is still in the final phases of development, and you can expect that announcement coming soon as well, approximately two months ahead of the release (mid-to-late Aug or very early September the latest).
