VIDEO: Is Dell's XPS Duo 12 Laptop of the Future?
8/31/2012 by: Theo Valich
When Microsoft announced it is entering the hardware business with its Surface tablet, the company stated it wanted to spur the innovation in the field. Judging by Dell's newest product, they might be right.
During its press conference at IFA 2012 show in Berlin, Germany, Dell representative introduced the XPS 12 Duo, its first Windows 8 clamshell design. This is without the doubt the most innovative design we've seen from Dell in ages, and it only goes to show that it is possible to create premium and innovative products and offer them at competing prices.

Innovation comes from... Dell? The XPS 12 Duo brings quite a few innovations to the market.
As you can see on the picture above, and the video below, the XPS 12 Duo combines aluminum frame with carbon fiber panels fr both display and the lower base, reducing the weight from plastic or metal combinations, all while increasing sturdiness. The aluminum alloy used is quite rigid and enables the display to flip 180 degrees and convert this ultrathin laptop into a tablet. From the images, it doesn't look much thicker than an Apple iPad, yet it offers a fully sized keyboard, native Full HD resolution (1920x1080) without any upscaling (iPad 3 upscales the resolution from 1024x768 to 2048x1536) and a full-sized touchscreen.
The convertible/clamshell/ultrathin/Ultrabook device will arrive on market in October, alongside the public debut of Microsoft Windows 8 operating system. You will be able to upgrade the components such as the processor (from Core i5 to i7), memory (4/8GB) and storage (SSD-only).
