Battleships, Volcanoes and GPUs - AMD's GPU14 Hawaii in Pictures
9/29/2013 by: Anshel Sag
AMD's GPU14 Tech Day was more like a Tech Week, where AMD flew out select members of the global press to Oahu, Hawaii to get a real feel for what the company was doing. The main event, obviously, was the September 25th announcement of the new Radeon product line, which only really included one new GPU, the Radeon R9 290X. While many have taken the same pictures of the same GPU and slides over and over, we decided that we'd rather give you pictures of the people that attended and what kind of activities the members of the press participated in.
For example, the day before the GPU14 press conference, AMD took everyone to Diamond Head and Raja Koduri gave a very brief talk about Mantle to get the press excited about the next day. Immediately after his speech those that wished to were able to hike up to the top of Diamond Head and get some photos of the surrounding areas, including Honolulu.
Later that day, we boarded the USS Missouri in order to get our first glimpses at the new Radeon R9 290X, which had yet to be announced. Matt Skynner was the model in charge of holding the new GPU for the members of the press to bombard him with flashes.
Note (below) how the press have surrounded the graphics card, now you see what its like to be surrounded by paparazzi. Even more amusing is Matt Skynner's puzzled expression to madness to the left of the photo.
Following that, we had a nice dinner with various developers, press and AMD partners. The following day was the GPU14 press conference and everyone was ready to hear what had to be said. Since we already covered the major announcements of GPU14, we won't go into much depth about what was talked about.
However, during the NDA briefing, the contents of which we cannot talk about yet, AMD did bring out a bit of their own brand of marketing and did a bit of additional hurt on Nvidia's own GTX 660 GPU. AMD's Colette LaForce
SVP and CMO came on stage with the 'Fixer' the star of AMD's Fixer video and gave a fairly broken Nvidia GPU an addition few stomps.
That pretty much wrapped up what we found the most interesting during the GPU14 conference that was not directly tied to the R9 290X or Mantle announcements. We have also gathered a full gallery for you to view below to see all of the pictures without any NDA material being visible.
