Google Android 4.4 is Kit Kat, Amazing Marketing Follows
9/3/2013 by: Anshel Sag
Google today surprised everyone with the unveiling of the new version of Android's new name and character, Kit Kat. Since Google has been traditionally naming every version of their operating system after a corresponding first letter of a dessert, many people believed that Android 4.4 would be Key Lime Pie to follow after Jelly Bean (4.2 and 4.3).
Google made the announcement via one of their Vice Presidents, Sundar Pichai, who posted the following image to Twitter and Google+. Interestingly enough, I was sitting in a press lounge and had a conversation with some other press that couldn't believe that such a naming scheme was true. However, after further inspection it definitely came out to be true.
With this unveiling, we also got some absolutely brilliant marketing from the people at Nestle. Nestle clearly worked closely with Google on this Kit Kat branding, which I believe will be worth billions to the Kit Kat brand considering Google's own operating system's market share. Nestle actually has a specific site for Kit Kat 4.4, which I believe to be one of the greatest co-branding ad campaigns I have ever seen in my entire life. They also have an accompanying video, which clearly mocks Apple's own launches and completely overdoes the whole Kit Kat 4.4 theme, I absolutely died watching it.
As if that weren't enough, Nestle and Google are working together on a marketing campaign where people that buy specially branded Kit Kat bars and win a new Nexus 7 or Google Play credits. This will further tie the two brands together and stir up sales for Nestle's own brand, which admittedly has some incredibly powerful global brand recognition.
Nevertheless, this tie up seems like a perfectly executed one and Google even posted a video on YouTube, which they have since pulled, that showed the unveiling of the new Kit Kat statue at Google's Headquarters. Unsurprisingly, this video also featured some new unreleased devices which clearly appear to be the new Nexus phones that have been rumored to be coming from Google. Since Google almost never does anything on accident, you can guarantee that this was a calculated decision to show these phones. If you watch the video you can see they are quite prominent and the actual design of the phones seems to follow very closely to the design language of the new Nexus 7.
