Can a free App compete against the all-mighty Adobe Photoshop?

My new netbook is an ASUS EEE(k) PC, but unlike on my desktop, I could not run Photoshop CS4 due to missing out 168 pixels [resolution: 1024x600, Ed.]. Instead of going with GIMP, a small 1.6MB download captured my heart.
